St. Barnabas Medical Center
Livingston, New Jersey
Saint Barnabas Medical Center is New Jersey's oldest and largest nonprofit,
nonsectarian hospital. The 645-bed institution cares for over 40,000
inpatients and nearly 60,000 Emergency Department patients each year.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology delivers 7,000 babies
annually, more than any other hospital in New Jersey.
Phoenix Medical Construction was engaged to build a 14,000 square
foot addition that would complete the sixth floor of the hospital.
The addition was designed and constructed for use as a postpartum
unit. Challenges included rigging steel and other materials to the
existing roof of the medical center and preventing water intrusion
into the building. The project was nevertheless completed within
the original Construction Project Management schedule and Gross
Maximum Price contract.
The project, valued at $4,811,000, was completed in April 2002.
It was built by Phoenix Medical Construction and designed by B.L.M.
Architects of Philadelphia, PA.
